Flower Charity ”PASS THE FLOWER BATON”

A place that continues to be loved by many in the town of Futako-Tamagawa.

Since its opening, Tamagawa Takashimaya S.C. (Hereafter referred as Tamagawa SC) has been deeply rooted in the local community and continues to operate, providing green spaces for people to gather and play in with its vast rooftop garden. GreenWise is responsible for the management of the rooftop garden, exterior landscaping and indoor planting, as well as the installation of seasonal decorations.

We have been contributing to the SDGs by managing plants at Tamagawa SC. This includes adopting ‘IPM’ (Integrated Pest Management) to reduce risk to people and the environment, as well as planning and organizing workshops and events to provide various people with opportunities to learn about and interact with plants.

Exciting seasonal decorations. Along with facing the challenges that come with them.

At Tamagawa SC, we use plant-based decorations to create the atmosphere where people can enjoy the changing seasons. However, one of the challenges that we inevitably face is what to do with the plants that have fulfilled their role as decorations. Although we do recycle them, it feels wasteful to discard plants that are still vibrant and could be appreciated further. We’ve been grappling with the question of whether there’s another way to make use of these plants.

While replanting, we sometimes have customers asking us, ’What will you do with the plants after replanting? If you’re going to discard them, Could I have them?’ In response to this, we proposed the ‘Flower Baton Project’ to Tamagawa SC, where we pass on the plants that have fulfilled their role to customers as a ‘Baton’. This allows customers to enjoy the plants instead of having to put them to waste.

A joyful relay of life, connecting through plants.

This project, which began in 2021, has gradually gained recognition, and the number of participants has steadily increased. Some people also post updates on Instagram using the hashtag ‘#flowerbatonproject’, showing that they are carefully nurturing the plants.

With this in mind, we planned and organized the “PASS THE FLOWER BATON” charity event, thinking that if we conducted a flower baton relay after the spring decorations at Tamagawa SC—which fill the facility with vibrant spring flowers every March—it would provide more people with an opportunity to think about environmental issues.

This event involved selling flower pots and cut flowers that had delighted people during the spring decorations for 500 to 3,000 yen each. The proceeds were then donated to environmental conservation organizations. Over the course of 4 days, many people attended the event, and we were able to pass on approximately 430 flower pots and 240 cut flowers to new homes as batons.

To continue moving forward with the community and its people.

This event provided a great opportunity for more people to learn about the SDGs initiatives that Tamagawa SC is undertaking.

・It is great to participate in environmental conservation activities while enjoying the process – not only by purchasing plants, but also by helping to reduce waste and making donations.
・I had always wondered what happened to the plants used for display, so I think this is a very good initiative。I hope it continues in the future.
・I’m always looking forward to seeing decorations at Tamagawa SC. I would like to carefully nurture the plants I purchased, using the indoor decorations as a model.

We are pleased to receive such customer feedback and are grateful for the support of those who agree with this project. At the same time, we sense a growing interest in environmental issues among people.

We realized that there are things we can do, and we continue to take action, even in small ways. We hope that the Flower Baton Project will inspire someone to take action.
