2019 Christmas Decorations
Under the searing sun, temperature rising up to 36 degrees celsius, we were in the mountains of Gunma prefecture, picking out a Christmas tree. All Christmas trees are special, but this Christmas tree is particularly important; Abies homolepis, a fir tree specie we asked our growers to take care of from years before. The back side of their leaves are white, something unique for the 50 year Anniversary Christmas project for Tamagawa Takashimaya.
All trees are unique in their shapes, and when we pick out trees, we use those that have been grown organically, without the use of pesticides and other chemicals. This particular fir tree is as tall as 6 meters, weighing 800kg. This was love-at-first-sight.
Being part of the Tamagawa Takashimaya greening for the entirety of 50 years, it was also a special moment for us decorating the Christmas tree. The ornaments are made of wood from forest thinning and they were also decorated with messages and drawings by people who came to join the decoration ceremony.
